Andrew Hale ran for 105 yards and two touchdowns Saturday night to lift host Man to a 27-20 victory over previously unbeaten Richwood in the Class A semifinals.
The No. 2 Hillbillies (12-1) earned their first championship game berth since 1984. Man plays Madonna at 7 p.m. Saturday in the state finals at Wheeling Island Stadium. As a Class AA school, Man lost in the state finals in 1977, 1980 and 1984.
Man trailed 7-0 early as the No. 3 Lumberjacks (12-1) needed only 53 seconds to take their first possession for a TD on quarterback Sam Tindal's 7-yard run.
The Hillbillies took the lead on a 4-yard run by Hale and a 2-yard run by Brandon Plymale. Richwood came within 14-13 at halftime on Tindal's 31-yard scoring pass to Seth Poston.
Hale broke off a 24-yard TD run in the third quarter to raise the Billies' lead to 21-13 and QB Ryan Crum tacked on a 1-yard scoring run with 11:22 left to make it 27-13.
Richwood was back within one TD when Tindal scored on another 7-yard run with 6:20 left to cap a drive that featured two fourth-and-long conversions.
The Jacks had one last possession at their own 26 with 1:52 left, but Man intercepted a first-down pass to end the suspense.
Tindal finished with 117 yards rushing and 168 passing and went over 2,000 yards rushing for the season. Brown caught eight passes for 109 yards.
For Man, Crum added 96 yards on the ground and Michael Lomax 72. The Hillbillies were three yards shy of 300 rushing.
